RESUMO A Caatinga é um bioma endêmico e ameaçado de floresta seca distribuída ao longo do Nordeste do Brasil. Nós avaliamos a importância conservacionista da unidade de conservação (UC) Floresta Nacional (FLONA) Contendas do Sincorá - utilizando besouros escarabeíneos como indicador da biodiversidade. Especificamente, nós contrastamos duas zonas com diferentes intensidades de impacto por corte seletivo que ocorreu no território da UC até 1997. Os besouros foram coletados 14 anos após o término o corte seletivo, através de armadilhas tipo pitfall iscadas, em três habitats principais da UC (mata ciliar, Caatinga em regeneração e Caatinga arbórea) encontrados em duas zonas (Zona de Preservação e de Manejo). Um total de 1.214 indivíduos de 21 espécies foi amostrados. As duas zonas apresentaram composições de espécies distintas, entretanto os habitats não apresentaram tais diferenças. Nossos resultados indicam que as áreas secundárias estão em um estado de conservação similares às de Caatinga arbórea e mata ciliar após 14 anos de corte. Além disso, nós identificamos sete espécies indicadoras de habitat, duas delas típicas do bioma da Caatinga, destacando a importância de reformulação do plano de manejo da UC considerando a manutenção da diversidade regional dos Scarabaeinae.

ABSTRACT The Caatinga is an endemic and threatened dry-forest biome distributed across northern Brazil. We evaluated the conservation value of a Caatinga Natural Reserve (NR) - Floresta Nacional (FLONA) Contendas do Sincorá - using Scarabaeinae dung beetles as a biodiversity indicator. Specifically, we contrasted two zones impacted by two distinct intensity of selective logging that happened inside the NR until 1997. Dung beetles were collected 14 years after logging, using baited pitfall traps within three main habitats (riparian forest, regenerating Caatinga or arboreal Caatinga) found in two zones (Preservation and Management Zones). A total of 1,214 individuals from 21 species were sampled. The two zones presented distinct species composition, although the habitats did not exhibit such differences. Our results indicated that the secondary areas are in a conservation status similar to arboreal Caatinga and riparian forest, 14 y after logging. Furthermore, we identified seven habitat-indicator species, two of them typical to Caatinga biome, highlighting the importance of updates in NR management plan considering the Scarabaeinae regional diversity management.

A implantação de Unidades de Conservação tem sido uma das melhores formas de conservação da biodiversidade. Regiõesde maiores altitudes como as da Serra de Carrancas e Luminárias, em Minas Gerais, possuem características físicas e bióticas que fazem destes ambientes detentores de espécies endêmicas e alta biodiversidade. Entretanto, são ambientes altamente susceptíveis aos processos erosivos acelerados, o que ocasiona a perda de solo, hábitat e espécies. Objetivou-se, com o presente estudo, avaliar as características físicas e bióticas da região da Serra de Carrancas e Luminárias através de indicadores da Vulnerabilidade Natural e propor a implantação de uma Unidade de Conservação em regiões que são, consideradas por este índice, locais de elevada importânciaambiental e que são altamente sensíveis às ações antrópicas. Os indicadores bióticos e abióticos gerenciados em um sistema de informações geográficas delimitaram áreas de maior vulnerabilidade na área de estudo e, devido à sensibilidade e abrangência áreas de maior vulnerabilidade na área de estudo e, devido à sensibilidade e abrangência da Serra de Carrancas e Luminárias, foi proposta a implantação de um Parque Estadual. O índice de vulnerabilidade natural se mostrou uma ferramenta eficiente na indicação de áreas a serem conservadas, reunindo fatores ambientais importantes, aumentando a eficiência das estratégias de conservação.

Conservation Units are among the best methods found to secure biodiversity conservation. The physical and biotic characteristics of high altitude areas such as Serra de Carrancas and Luminárias, in Minas Gerais state, make these places a home to endemic species and to rich biodiversity. However, these environments are highly susceptible to fast advancing erosive processes that potentially lead to soil, habitat and species loss. This study aims to evaluate the physical and biotic characteristics of the Serra de Carrancas and Luminárias region using Natural Vulnerability indicators, and also to propose Conservation Unit implementation in areas which, as per this index, are considered environmentally critical and highly sensitive to anthropic actions. Biotic and abiotic indicators, as managed by a geographic information system, identified the most vulnerable areas in the study site and, given the sensitivity and scope of Serra de Carrancas and Luminárias, a State Park was proposed. The natural vulnerability index proved to be an effective tool to pinpoint prospective conservation unit areas, gathering important environmental factors and thus improving the efficiency of conservation strategies.

We aimed to compare the soil ant diversity in different land use systems from Atlantic Forest area, in Southern Bahia state, Brazil. The ants were sampled in 16 sites: two primary forest sites (un-logged forest); three young secondary forests (<8 years old); three intermediate secondary forests (8-20 years old); three old secondary forests (>20 years old); three Eucalyptus grandis plantations (3-7 years old), and two introduced pastures. Each site was sampled in three sampling points 15 m apart, and distant over 50 m from the site edge. In each sampling point we gathered the litter from a 1 m² and extracted the ants with Winkler extractors during 48h. We found 103 ant species from 29 genera and eight subfamilies. The five richest genera were Pheidole (19 species), Solenopsis (8), Apterostigma (10), Hypoponera (7) e Paratrechina (5). The highest ant richness density was found in the primary forest (7.4 species/sample; S = 37; n = 5); followed by the old secondary forest (5.33 species/sample; S = 48; n = 9); young secondary forest (5.25 species/sample; S = 42, n = 8); eucalyptus plantation (4.22 species/sample; S = 38, n = 9), intermediate secondary forest (3.5 species/sample; S = 35, n = 10, and introduced pasture (2.67 species/sample; S = 16, n = 6). The ecosystems with higher structural complexity showed the highest ant richness density by sample. Therefore, in the Atlantic Forest region, the eucalyptus plantation is a better alternative of land use to conserve the ant biodiversity than pastures, and quite similar to native secondary forests in ant community characteristics.

As mudanças espaciais da composição de espécies estão ligadas a aspectos ambientais da variação dos habitats. As paisagens naturais de Minas Gerais são organizadas em mosaicos criados pela ação antrópica ou por fatores naturais. O estudo realizou-se com escarabeíneos na Chapada das Perdizes, município de Carrancas, MG. A região apresenta quatro fitofisionomias principais: campo de cerrado, campo limpo, floresta e campo rupestre. O objetivo do estudo foi detectar diferenças na distribuição dos escarabeíneos e avaliar a diversidade beta (dissimilaridade de espécies) entre as fitofisionomias. Os escarabeíneos foram coletados com armadilhas do tipo alçapão, com isca de baço de boi ou fezes humanas, em quatro áreas de cada fitofisionomia. Foram coletados 2.363 indivíduos de 52 espécies: 1.247 indivíduos de 29 espécies na floresta, sendo 20 exclusivas dessa fitofisionomia; 352 indivíduos de 17 espécies no campo limpo, com quatro espécies exclusivas; 386 indivíduos de 19 espécies no campo de cerrado, com cinco espécies exclusivas; e 378 indivíduos de 20 espécies no campo rupestre, com cinco espécies exclusivas. A armadilha com fezes foi a mais eficiente na captura e a floresta foi a fitofisionomia com maior diversidade e abundância de escarabeíneos. Isso sugere que a cobertura vegetal influenciou a distribuição da comunidade desses besouros. A diversidade beta alta mostra que as fitofisionomias são complementares entre si. Portanto, todas são importantes para a conservação, já que o conjunto de espécies que ocorre em cada ambiente é essencial para a manutenção da diversidade regional.

The spatial changes in species composition are closely related to the environmental aspects associated to habitat variation. The natural landscapes of Minas Gerais are organized in mosaics, associated to anthropic action or natural factors. Here we study dung beetles in the Perdizes Plateau, Carrancas (Minas Gerais, Southeastern Brazil). The area of study has a landscape composed mainly by four phytophysiognomies: Brazilian savannah, altitudinal grasslands, rupestrian fields and forests. The objective of our study was to detect the spatial distribution in composition of dung beetles and estimate beta diversity between phytophysiognomies. The dung beetles were collected in four areas of each phytophysiognomy, using pitfall traps baited with carrion or human feces. A total of 2,363 individuals of 52 species were collected: 1,247 individuals of 29 species at the forest, 20 exclusive to this phytophysiognomy; 352 individuals of 17 species at the grassland, with four exclusive species; 386 individuals of 19 species at the Brazilian savannah, with five exclusive species; and 378 individuals of 20 species at the rupestrian field, with five exclusive species. The traps baited with feces were the most efficient in capturing dung beetles, and the forest was the phytophysiognomy with the highest diversity and abundance. This pattern indicates that plant-covering influences the structure of the dung beetle community. High beta diversity indicates that phytophysiognomies are complementary. However, the other phytophysiognomies are also important for conservation, once species composition occurring at each environment is essential for the maintenance of the regional diversity.

As respostas das comunidades de formigas às mudanças ambientais de fragmentos florestais para agroecossistemas (café ou pastagem) foram avaliadas na região sul do Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Neste trabalho, avaliaram-se as interações entre fragmentos florestais e os dois agroecossistemas mais típicos do sudeste do Brasil: monocultivo de café a pleno sol e pastagem introduzida. A comunidade de formigas foi amostrada em cinco áreas de cada agroecossistema, dentro de fragmentos florestais adjacentes a estes e nas bordas entre os dois sistemas. Em cada área, foram retiradas 15 amostras de 1m² de serapilheira, das quais foram extraídas as formigas, utilizando-se o extrator de Winkler. Registrou-se um total de 165 espécies de formigas distribuídas em 48 gêneros e 10 subfamílias. O cafezal apresentou o menor número de espécies observado e menor riqueza estimada. As razões das variações observadas entre as áreas são discutidas.

The responses of the ant community to environmental change, from forest fragment to agroecosystems (coffee or pasture) were evaluated in the south of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. In this paper we analized the interactions between forest and the two most typical agroecosystem from southest Brazil: sun-growing coffee plantation and introduced pasture. We sampled the ant community from five of each agroecosystems, inside the adjacent forest fragment, and on the edge between them. In each site we removed the litter from fifteen 1m² plots and extracted the ants using a Winkler extractor. A total of 165 ant species, distributed in 48 genera and 10 subfamilies were recorded. The coffee plantation presented the lowest abundance and estimated species richness. The causes of the changes observed among the areas are discussed.

As comunidades de Formicidae (Insecta, Hymenoptera) foram estudadas em fragmentos de floresta semidecídua inseridos no bioma Mata Atlântica medindo de 2,99 a 45,5 ha na região do Alto do Rio Grande, Minas Gerais, Brasil. As formigas foram coletadas em 15 amostras de serapilheira de 1 m² em cada fragmento, usando o método de extrator de Winkler. Cada amostra teve distância mínima de 50 m uma da outra. Um total de 142 espécies de formigas foi distribuído entre 40 gêneros, 23 tribos e 10 subfamílias. As comunidades amostradas mostraram uma alta riqueza e altos valores no índice de diversidade. O tamanho da área dos fragmentos não influenciou na riqueza de espécies de formigas.

The community of Formicidae (Insecta, Hymenoptera) in semideciduous seasonal forest of the Atlantic rain forest biome was studied in remnants ranging from 2.99 to 45.45 ha, in the region of the Alto do Rio Grande, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The ants collected in 15 samples of litter of one square meter each, using Winkler extractors method, in each forest fragment. Each sample were taken at intervals of 50 meters. A total of 142 species of ants, were distributed into 40 genera, 23 tribes and 10 subfamilies. The communities showed a high richness and diversity indices values. The size of the fragments did not influence the ant richness.

O gênero Orius Wolff é composto por espécies de percevejos predadores, principalmente de tripes, encontradas em muitos ecossistemas naturais e manejados. Entretanto, as interações que podem ocorrer entre esses predadores e suas presas no mesmo "habitat" não são bem conhecidas entre as espécies das regiões tropicais. Este estudo teve como objetivo registrar a interação de espécies de Orius e de tripes coletadas na mesma planta, ou seja, presentes no mesmo "habitat". As coletas foram feitas em várias plantas cultivadas, no campo e em casas de vegetação e em plantas invasoras. A forma e o grau de associação entre as espécies foram determinados, utilizando-se o coeficiente de Spearman (R), calculado com dados de presença/ausência das espécies (Orius e tripes) no mesmo "habitat". Orius insidiosus (Say) foi encontrado associado positivamente aos tripes Frankliniella sp., Neohydatothrips sp. e Haplothrips gowdeyi (Franklin) e negativamente associado a Frankliniella schultzei (Trybom) e Caliothrips phaseoli (Hood). Orius thyestes Herring e Orius sp1 ocorreram simultaneamente em 10 espécies de tripes sem, contudo, apresentar associação significativa, enquanto Orius perpunctatus (Reuter) esteve associado positivamente às espécies Frankliniella sp. e Neohydatothrips sp. e, negativamente, a Frankliniella gemina (Moulton).

The genus Orius Wolff comprise species that are mostly thrip predators , in natural and managed ecosystems. Interactions between Orius species and its preys in the same habitat in tropical areas are not well known. The objective of this research was to record the interactions between Orius and thrips species present in the same habitat. Sampling on crops and weeds were conducted in the field and greenhouse conditions. The association level between Orius and thrips species was evaluated by Spearman coefficient (R) (presence/absence of the species in the same habitat). Orius insidiosus (Say) was found positively associated with Frankliniella sp., Neohydatothrips sp. and Haplothrips gowdeyi (Franklin), and negatively associated with Frankliniella schultzei (Trybom) and Caliothrips phaseoli (Hood). Orius thyestes Herring and Orius sp1 coexist with 10 thrips species, but no significant association was found between those predators and thrips species. Orius perpunctatus (Reuter) was found positively associated with Frankliniella sp. and Neohydatothrips sp., and negatively associated with Frankliniella gemina (Moulton).

Foaram amostrados besouros carpófilos no dossel de 4 fragmentos florestais no Sudeste do Brasil. Em cada fragmento foram selecionados 2 pontos, distantes entre si pelo menos 50 m, os quais foram amostrados em 2 dias consecutivos. Utilizaram-se armadilhas com isca de banana fermentada que permaneceram no campo por 24 h, dispostas em 4 níveis de altura no dossel (1.5 m, 4.5 m, 7.5 m e 10.5 m), visando determinar a distribuição vertical no dossel quanto à riqueza, a abundância relativa e a composição de espécies. Foram coletados 1236 coleópteros (86 espécies pertencentes a 19 famílias). As famílias mais diversas foram Nitidulidae (26.4% das espécies), Staphylinidae (20.7%) e Cerambycidae (9.2%). Os níveis de altura superiores apresentaram maior riqueza e abundância relativa de espécies. O nível inferior de altura (1.5 m) apresentou menor riqueza de espécies que os demais. A maior concentração das espécies e indivíduos nos níveis de altura superiores da floresta é discutida em relação ao microclima e à distribuição de recursos alimentares. A distribuição das espécies entre os fragmentos foi heterogênea, possivelmente respondendo ao efeito de suas diferentes áreas, formas e graus de preservação.

Fragmentation is one of the most important issues for conservation challenges. Habitat fragmentation results in the interruption of many biological processes that are essential for keeping the structure and functioning of natural ecosystems. The maintenance of habitat structure and its consequences in diversity is highly connected to spatial heterogeneity. There are many studies about spatial heterogeneity of habitats concerning horizontal effects; however, a new focus is given to vertical resource distribution, considering that half of the world´s biological diversity must be sheltered in the canopy. This study was conducted in 4 Atlantic forest fragments near the town of Lavras, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and its main objective was to analyze the diversity and vertical distribution of carpophylous beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera) inside and between forest patches. At each forest fragment, beetles were sampled in 2 consecutive days, at 2 distinct points at least 50 m apart. Traps were baited with fermented banana and exposed for 24 h in 4 different strata of the canopy (1.5 m, 4.5 m, 7.5 m and 10.5 m high). A total of 1236 beetles were sampled (86 species from 19 families). The most diverse families were Nitidulidae (26.4% of the species), Staphylinidae (20.7%) and Cerambycidae (9.2%). We observed a significant difference in the vertical distribution of composition of species and structure of the analyzed communities, with the upper stratum presenting a higher species richness and relative abundance. Explanations for the distribution observed are discussed regarding the availability of food resources and microhabitat characteristics. Species distribution among fragments was not homogeneous, being probably the result of the differences present in areas, shapes and conservation levels of the sampled fragments.

Buscando determinar se a estrutura da vegetação afeta a riqueza e estrutura da comunidade de besouros predadores (Histeridae), quatro ambientes no Espírito Santo, com grau decrescente de complexidade estrutural de vegetação (restinga arbórea preservada, restinga aberta de Clusia spp., restinga queimada e pastagem) foram amostrados com armadilha iscada (fezes humanas e de cavalo). Foram encontradas oito espécies de Histeridae, sendo que a riqueza de espécies foi praticamente igual nos oito ambientes (4 a 5 espécies), e a diferença de diversidade não foi significativa. Apesar da não significância, as comunidades podem ser diferenciadas pela substituição de espécies dominantes e diferenciação de composição. O padrão de substituição de espécies foi relacionado à diferença de fisionomia da vegetação, que ao impor barreiras à dispersão de odores, afeta a localização dos recursos, o que permite que espécies raras (porém mais eficientes na localização de recursos) sejam mantidas na comunidade. A riqueza local nos vários ambientes estudados não foi diferente devido à natureza efêmera (restritos quanto ao tempo em que fica disponível para colonização e terem seu poder de atração reduzido no tempo) dos recursos em decomposição, impondo uma restrição ao número de espécies. Sua distribuição aleatória e imprevisível, por sua vez, é responsável pelo caráter lotérico de sua colonização, onde tanto espécies abundantes quanto raras podem colonizá-lo, seja pela vantagem numérica ou por uma eventual superioridade na capacidade de localização do recurso.

Aiming to determine if the vegetation structure affects the local and regional richness and community structure of predator beetles (Histeridae), four habitats established on sandy soils (restingas and pasture) in Espírito Santo State, Brazil, with a structural complexity gradient and showing varying degrees of disturbance were surveyed with pitfall-baited traps (human and horse dung). Eight histerid species were registered. The species richness was almost equal in all habitats (4 to 5 species), and there was no significant difference in diversity and equitability. Although not significantly different in diversity, the communities could be considered different due to the gradual substitution of the dominant species and composition. The species substitution pattern was related to the change in vegetation physiognomy, which seems to impose barriers to the odour dispersion, affecting resource location, and allowing rare (but more efficient in resource localization) species to be maintained in the community. The local richness of histerids in pasture and in different physiognomies of restinga is similar and low due to the ephemeral nature of decaying resources, which impose a limit to the number of species that get to the resource. Its spatial and temporal unpredictability, by its turn, allows both common and rare species to remain in the community, the first through numeric advantage and the last through an eventual superiority in finding the resource.

Atta robusta Borgmeier foi descrita como endêmica da Baixada Fluminense, Rio de Janeiro. No entanto, os poucos estudos sobre a espécie não são concordantes quanto a sua distribuição geográfica. A presente nota comunica a ocorrência de A. robusta nas restingas da Ilha de Guriri, norte do Espírito Santo. Esse novo dado permite afirmar que A. robusta não é endêmica da Baixada Fluminense, estando distribuída pelo menos nas restingas dos estados do Rio de Janeiro e Espírito Santo.

Atta robusta Borgmeier has been described as an endemic species from the lowlands of Rio de Janeiro State. However, the scarce studies carried out with species disagree in relation to its geographic distribution. In this note we describe the occurrence of A. robusta in the "restingas" of Guriri Island, north of Espírito Santo State. This occurrence makes clear that A. robusta is not endemic from Rio de Janeiro State, being distributed at least in "restingas" in Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo states.
